Hiking the Lares Trek to Machu Picchu – Part 3

Welcome to the third and final day of hiking the Lares Trek to Machu Picchu. Catch up on the first two posts here:

Part One

Part Two

The third day is the easiest. It’s a downhill half-day of hiking that takes you through some Incan ruins, as we hadn’t a chance to see any ruins thus far in our trek, one of the things that differentiates Lares from the Inca Trail.

The ruins you see here are from an old Incan outpost, which was one of many dotted throughout the valley. These were used to pass warnings of invaders along the valleys and mountains, with scouts bearing large horns making deafening sounds to forward messages of danger.

The final day leads you through some forests with creeks running through. It’s a very easy hike that leads you back to civilisation surprisingly quickly!

Obligatory dog.

This is a very, very short one. But as is Day Three. A lot of it will be spent eating, recuperating and driving to Aguas Caliente, the town closest to Machu Picchu.

The benefit of the Lares Trek is that you’re able to relax a little bit ahead of going to Machu Picchu. We reached our hotel very late at night, but I was able to have a shower and sleep in a real bed for 3-4 hours, which felt more valuable than 7 hours on the ground in a tent. We got to eat a real breakfast, have as much coffee as we needed and wash days of suncream off of us before heading to see one of the wonders of the world! To me, being able to feel refreshed at Machu Picchu is something that made the Lares Trek much more ideal to me.

Next time, we head to the main attraction! Machu Picchu!
