INTERVIEWED: Rogues and Brogues

Welcome to Interviewed, a series of chats and conversations with creators of all kinds.

D: Who are you and what do you do online?

I: I’m Ian, a 30 something (let’s not get too bogged down with exact ages) from Belfast and I’m the creator of Rogues+Brogues.

D: How did you get your start as a blogger?

I: In a previous job, I was the digital marketing manager in charge of wrangling all the blogger content. I spotted that at that time there wasn’t a bit male blogger population, especially in Belfast, so thought I could share my thoughts and experiences.

D: You’re a fan of travelling, you’re always in Germany, do you have a connection there?

I: Not really – we only visited Berlin for the first time in January 2017. We instantly fell in love with the cosmopolitan feeling to the city and have been back 4 times in a year. It’s definitely somewhere we can see ourselves relocating too.

D: Where in Berlin would you recommend?

I: Where do I start? Depending on your interests, there are so many inspiring independent shopping options, coffee shops, bars and sights.

For shopping: Bikini (it’s a mall) and the streets around Mitte.

For coffee (my ultimate vice): Five Elephant, Kaffe Kirsche, Silo and Bonanza.

Bars: Common Ground at Berlin Circus and Scotch and Sofa.

Sights: Book the free walking tour and you’ll take most of them in within a few hours.

D: As a grooming/fashion blogger do you have any favourite brands or pieces?

I: I started my blog partly to share my experiences of trying to find clothes for the guy who’s not the typical blogger build. I’m short, I’m chunky and I’m older than many of them out there so I have to be clever and picky when it comes to brands.

On the high street; I usually end up in H&M (although I think this stands for Hit&Miss at lot of the time) or Pull & Bear.

Favourite pieces I have in my possession are Red Wings boots and my ever grown collection of bags and backpacks from brands as varied as Mulberry to Sandqvist.

Grooming wise; I’m a big fan of Kiehls, Molton Brown and Lush.

D: How is it being in a blogging relationship? It’s nice being able to know more about you by simply knowing your partner too!

I: My better half is always there to run an eye over my content – I tend to edit quickly and there’s often a grammar mistake or too.

It’s great fun as we get to spend time together at events neither of us would normally get to attend.

D: What piece of content have you created that you’re a big fan of?

I: I love my Rogues Gallery series where I feature famous men and approach to style and then I share some pieces that can help readers tap their look. I enjoy sharing inspiration and digging around for product and pieces that can fit the personality of that person.

I wrote about my experiences with depression in a post that a lot of people messaged me about; saying it helped them process and deal with their own mental health. I think that is something that normally wouldn’t be featured on a fashion blog but I’m very proud of.

D: Which creators are you a big supporter of?

I: Mat of Buckets and Spades & Robin of Man for Himself : these guys are leading the way in male blogging and creation in my opinion.

D: Is there anything you’d like to try in the future?

I: YouTube hangs over my like the Sword of Damocles. I’ve previously said I would never go near it (I can’t bear to hear my recorded voice) but I think I’m missing out on some potentially fun and beneficial opportunities.

D: And finally my token three mini Qs: Your Hogwarts house, your favourite movie and your favourite artist/band.

I: Ravenclaw: I’m a bit of a smart arse.

Movie: Labyrinth: I used to watch it on my birthday every year as a mini tradition.

Favourite band: Hmm, this is a tough one. I’m a big fan of acoustic singer songwriter types so there’s usually the likes of Fleet Foxes, First Aid Kit or Bon Iver in my playlists.

A huge thank you to Ian for joining us today. Keep up with him on Twitter and Pinterest and of course make sure to check out his blog beyond the posts already linked in here.
