Last year I wrote about my favourite new tracks each and every month, there were so many, it was a lot of fun to listen to and collate all these new bits of music. For 2018, I thought I’d switch it up a bit and focus on what I am actually listening to the most.
Using Obscurify I found out the top 10 songs I listened in the six weeks leading up to 08/02/18 and have written a little spiel on each below. I find any and all Spotify data completely intriguing so I spend far too much time on this site.
1) ALL I HAVE – CHARLIE BARNES
I’m a really big fan of Charlie, he’s such a talented musician and songwriter and this track is where he really shines. ‘All I Have’ is the first single from his upcoming album Oceanography, which comes out in a few short weeks. If you like upbeat acoustics, this guy is for you.
I recently interviewed Charlie for work, he is very genuinely one of the kindest and most thoughtful people I’ve had a chat with.
2) GET OUT – CHVRCHES
I used to listen to CHVRCHES non-stop. That first album was my proverbial ‘everything’. I sorta forgot about them until ‘Get out’, cue the reaction image of ‘big miss steak’
‘Get Out’ is the best piece of electro pop there’s been in a while. It’s simple yet absolutely amazing, sort of like Gaga’s ‘Perfect Illusion’ It knows what it’s set out to do and completely nails it.
3) MY MY MY! – TROYE SIVAN
I’ve been following Troye Sivan for years now, long before his first EP and here we are approaching album two. I feel like a proud parent, despite the fact he’s 15 days older than I am. ‘My My My’ is quite possibly Troye’s best work yet. His lyrics have matured, his sound is more refined and that’s a massive deal considering how polished and complete Blue Neighbourhood was. I can’t wait for the rest of this album.
4) STRANGERS – SIGRID
Sigrid is so young and so talented. Every track she’s released thus far has been such a refreshing take on pop, Sigrid is dropping bop after bop. None other has been so incredibly catchy and commercially successful as ‘Strangers’ has been thus far. She’s climbing the charts, been crowned BBC’s Sound of 2018 and continuing to dominate. Strangers really shines in the breakdown towards the end of the track, it’s impossible to keep up with her in the song- trust me, I’ve tried.
5) SYMPHONY (FEAT. ZARA LARSSON) – CLEAN BANDIT
This song might have been a huge hit early on in 2017, but we all get onto some tracks late right? After being featured on Top of the Pops on Christmas Day I haven’t been able to stop listening to this. Zara has such a powerful voice and Clean Bandit can take any sound and turn it into a chart topper. A match made in heaven.
6) THE MAN – THE KILLERS
Wonderful Wonderful is The Killers most daring and experimental album yet. Their comeback single ‘The Man’ has been the anthem of my 2017 + 18 thus far. It’s so much louder and boisterous than the rest of the record and really calls back to the early days of The Killers whilst still looking forward. Lead singer Flowers reflecting on how he felt extremely important during his early days of fame is both kinda sad and empowering. It’s a jam.
7) SHE LOVES CONTROL – CAMILLA CABELLO
Camilla Cabello’s debut album is my guilty pleasure. It’s one of the best pop albums released recently, and that isn’t something I expected from a Fifth Harmony alum, but she killed it! The standout track has to be ‘She Loves Control’. Camilla has blended mainstream pop with Latin pop on so many tracks, this one being the absolute best.
8) STAY OFF MY MIND – SKOTT
Skott has FINALLY released an EP, we’ve been waiting for this forever. Skott has released so many tracks individually, all phenomenal and this EP is the same, if not better. Every track is fantastic, but I’ve had ‘Stay Off My Mind’ specifically stuck in my head. It’s softer and more pop than her other work, however it’s just proved that Skott can nail anything that she puts her hand to.
9) THE GOOD SIDE – TROYE SIVAN
Troye has given us another taste of TS2 with ‘The Good Side’. It’s completely different to any other of his work, specifically ‘My My My!’. Troye’s a complete threat, like Skott, anything he touches turns to gold.
10) SEND THEM OFF (SPOTIFY SESSIONS) – BASTILLE
I have a playlist of live performances/Spotify Sessions, it’s beautiful, it’s magical and it’s obviously full of Bastille. ‘Send Them Off’ is already a fantastic track, but to hear it stripped back and played with so much less production than the studio version is incredible. It’s a great track in every form and I can’t get enough of it.
