Off the track (listing)

The best version of a song isn’t always the ‘regular’ version. Take the first song in this list as an example, you always heard the Lana Del Rey x Cedric Gervais remix of ‘Summertime Sadness’ rather than the original! Both are great, that’s not to say I don’t love some Lana Del Rey on her own, I well and truly do.

Anyway, let’s get on with it! This list includes remixes, covers, acoustic versions, other performances, anything that isn’t the regular!

Lana Del Rey + Cedric Gervais – Summertime Sadness Remix

This reminds me of being freshly 18 and going out clubbing with my friends all the time to bask in being able to drink alcohol legally. This was on all the time that summer, and I always had it on repeat, even though I would usually take a Lana solo song over anything like this.

Sia – Elastic Heart (Piano Version)

Sia’s vocals deserve to be heard over any and all music, so a single piano compliments her voice perfectly. The piano is my favourite instrument and I’m thinking about taking up playing again, I miss it so much.

The only downside to this is the lack of the amazingly choreographed video starring Maddie Ziegler + Shia LaBeouf.

Paramore – Love’s Not a Competition (Kaiser Chiefs Cover)

I’m not sure how ‘good’ this is to be honest, but it reminds me of being 13 and in love with Paramore, I’d finally found a band that understood my teen angst and was edgy! I was so alive! But I’m soft and gooey on the inside, just like this cover.

Marina and the Diamonds – Starring Role (Acoustic)

The regular version of Starring Role is probably one of my least favourite MATD songs, it just doesn’t click with me, and the pacing and music feel a little off. However, this is one of my favourite videos of all time. This feels truer to lyrics, it’s more raw and bloody brilliant.

Miley Cyrus – Jolene (Dolly Parton Cover)

Everyone and their mother loves this, and I’m not exception.

Miley Cyrus and Ariana Grande – Don’t Dream Its Over (Crowded House Cover)

I’ve listened to this over and over, Miley and Ariana have brilliant voices, their natural talent shines through in this cover.

I’m not even a fan of Miley Cyrus, but these two tracks really highlight what incredible vocals she’s capable of.

Lorde + Disclosure – Magnets (A Trak remix)

I’m completely beside myself due it being 3 years since Lorde’s debut album (Pure Heroine) dropped. I need new music, pronto. Magnets has been tiding me over, it’s become one of my all time favourite songs. The beat, the music, the lyrics, the vocals, everything is amazing – and if you haven’t seen the video, you’re doing yourself a disservice.

This remix is 1) great for the gym 2) something I could see myself dancing to in a bar with whisky in tow.

Florence and the Machine – Stand By Me (Ben E. King Cover)

Florence can do no wrong, I describe seeing Florence perform live as religious. She brought me to tears with her voice, and this cover is Flo at her best.

Now for the Bastille section because of my current obsession with them, and their plethora of covers to choose from!

Bastille – Overjoyed (Acapella)

This was the video that made me finally accept that I will never be able to sing, as the only way I can reach those notes is if I sell my soul to the devil, and I did that long ago for sick dance moves. As Twitter would say, she just doesn’t have the range.

That’s me, not Dan Smith, he has the bloody range.

Woody’s body drumming is so on beat! He’s a drummer through and through! This stripped down version of Overjoyed is a great contrast the bass heavy single version, but still feels ‘authentically’ Overjoyed.

Bastille – Blame (Vevo Presents)

The set of Bastille’s Vevo Presents series fits no song better than ‘Blame’, recounting a dark moment between two gangsters involving one preparing to pull the trigger on the other. The moodiness of the atmosphere really builds upon the song.

Dan’s vocals at the end have made me ready for my life of organised crime…orrrrr watching this on repeat. I may go for the latter.

Bastille – No Scrubs (TLC Cover)

I’ve elected No Scrubs as my go to karaoke song, even if I have only been to karaoke once, and didn’t perform No Scrubs. It’s the same situation as Earth Song.

Whilst I do love the version ‘No Angels’ on OPH2 featuring Ella Eyre, I watched Bastille perform this cover at V Festival (strangely, DNCE also covered No Scrubs that day too), and it blew me away.

Bastille + Gabrielle Aplin – Dreams (Fleetwood Mac Cover)

My favourite Fleetwood Mac song covered by my favourite band.

This duet makes me want a girlfriend just so we can sing this.

Bastille – Titanium (David Guetta + Sia Cover)

The first time I listened to this, I noticed that the comments were full of people claiming this to be the first Bastille song they dislike! Yes it’s different for Bastille, and yes it’s massively different to the original, but that is exactly what makes it an interesting and unique cover!

Thank you for reading, it’s always fun to write about music! Maybe I’ll make a post on Christmas songs that aren’t the staple few, i.e. Ariana Grande’s Santa Baby.
